Unlocking learning through literacy and numeracy

Unlocking learning
The Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC) is supporting learners in the youth justice system and beyond to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills through the development of customised learning materials in the General Education for Adults (CGEA) course and certificates .
The certificates in General Education for Adults are accredited courses developed to address the education and training needs of learners who have left secondary school early and need to improve their literacy, basic maths and general education skills.
Course materials have been developed by BYETC to support learners to complete the qualifications using a blended or mixed-mode approach meaning students are required to complete activities and assessments in both a work journal and in the eCoach learner management system (LMS).
BYETC has been working with eCoach to develop an engaging customised course supportive of learners who have previously struggled with a mainstream curriculum. Further information on this collaboration can be found here.
It is our aim that students become increasingly independent and are able to complete more complex language and literacy tasks as the progress through the course levels. As a significant proportion f our students are from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds there is a strong emphasis on embedding culturally appropriate images, text and perspectives in all student work journals and electronic resources.
If you would like more information about BYETC’s course materials and how you can access them for you site please contact us at: unlockinglearning@brisbaneyoutheu.eq.edu.au

Latest project

Watch this space as BYETC is currently developing learning materials for the Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory) course and the Course in General Education for Adults.  These courses are pitched at those learners who are still developing the skills needed to be able to complete the Certificate I level course. They will build foundational reading writing, speaking and listening skills for communication and essential numeracy skills in calculations, measurement, time, data and shape.
