Our school

Welcome to Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC).

BYETC is a state high school which operates within the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre at Wacol. It caters for students, both female and male, from across the state that are either on remand or have been sentenced for criminal offences. A significant number of the student population are Indigenous Australians. The school plays an important role in the community by providing young people in detention with the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and values that can enhance their capacity to pursue positive choices in the future. The school facilitates a specialised education and training curriculum tailored to the needs of the young people in detention. The classes take place in purpose-built facilities with a low teacher to student ratio. The school offers a range of certificate courses, career education, personal development, and literacy and numeracy support. Students have the opportunity to participate in local sporting competitions and the school has cultivated a range of partnerships in the community that provide specialised services which enhance students’ social and life skills.

At BYETC we value:

  • personalised teaching and learning delivered with consistently high expectations of both staff and students
  • supportive relationships which encourage social, emotional learning and positive behaviours
  • purposeful pathways that encourage good citizenship and the fulfilment of personal goals
  • inclusiveness and the richness difference brings to society
  • productive partnerships that encourage and motivate ‘Learning for Life’.
