NAIDOC Week 2019

Pillars painted by BYETC students as part of the 2019 NAIDOC calendar of events

Staff and students at BYETC all came together in Week 2 of Term 3 to celebrate the history and culture of our nation’s first people. Students attended an official NAIDOC ceremony run by the Detention Centre and were joined by elders and other visitors from our local communities. The ceremony featured cultural dance performances by our young people and stories of their Dreaming and culture.

Leading up to NAIDOC week members of our HPE faculty attended a workshop at Bunyaville Environmental Education Centre (BEEC) to learn a range of traditional Indigenous games. The HPE team hosted the inaugural BYETC Indigenous Games over 3 days during NAIDOC week. The games were officially opened and closed by the BYDC Cultural Team with the consultation of local Elder, Aunty Lilly Davidson, from the Liworaji Aboriginal Association.
Three traditional games Gorri, Kolap and Buroinjin were taught to students. All young people actively participated and engaged in the games with enthusiasm. It was a memorable day for both staff and students.
Students also participated in a mural project, depicting totems and images of significance to the young people. This art work is now a permanent fixture on the pillars outside the school’s art room and is an enduring reminder of the 2019 NAIDOC theme, ‘Voice, Treaty, Truth’.
