African drumming performance

African drumming

On 17 May 2012 over 80 students attended an interactive drumming performance, ‘Salaka: Sharing the Spirit of Africa’. The name Salaka means ‘Sharing’ and the aim of the group was to share the traditional rhythms and music of Ghana with the younger generations.

Students watched the 3 energetic performers perform traditional Ghanaian drumming, dance and singing. Selected students and staff then performed with the group before the exciting finale when all audience members were given their own drum to participate in a collective drumming session. Rave reviews of the performance were received and many students asked if similar performances could be organised to allow them to see the performance styles of other cultural groups.
